President’s report Netherlands Society for Evolutionary Biology (NLSEB) over 2018
In 2018 the Netherlands Society for Evolutionary Biology (NLSEB) was founded in Wageningen on the 17th of January 2018, when the founding board (Marcel Visser (President), Sander van Doorn (Secretary), Jacintha Ellers (Treasurer), Nico van Straalen (board member) & Frank Bruggeman (board member, who could not attend), signed the constitution.
The founding board served NLSEB until the First conference of the Netherlands Society for Evolutionary Biology (NLSEB) (11 April 2018 in Ede) when the first General Assembly took place and the first board was elected: Prof.dr. M.E. Visser (president), Prof.dr. J. Ellers (ESEB liaison), Dr. G.S. van Doorn (Secretary), Dr.ir. L. Laan (Treasurer), Prof.dr. J.A.G.M. de Visser (board member) & Dr. R. Hermsen (board member).
At the General Assembly, the society’s by-laws were approved and the NLSEB logo, winner of the logo contest, was revealed. The logo was designed by Bastiaan von Meijenfeldt.
The main activity in 2018 was the organization of the First Conference of the Netherlands Society for Evolutionary Biology (NLSEB) by the Meetings Cie 2018: Marleen Cobben, Martijn Egas, Ole Madsen, Bas Teusink, Eveline Verhulst, Arjan de Visser & Franjo Weissing. The meeting was a great success, with 150 participants and a large number of excellent talks and posters. The Posterprize was awarded to Mirte Bosse (WUR).
The board met three times in 2018 after the General Assembly (13 June, 12 September & 17 December). These meetings were partly on the logistics of getting NLSEB organized (membership and financial administration software; development of a privacy statement; ANBI status for the society; setting up the website (www.nlseb.nl); setting up a Twitter account (currently with 78 followers); installation of two confidentiality advisors (Bregje Wertheim & Bas Zwaan)). The board also worked on the NLSEB2019 meeting and on the development of a Policy Plan 2019.
Furthermore, NLSEB had a meeting with the chair of the Round table of Life Sciences and with the Head of Life Sciences of NWO on the central position of evolutionary biology within the life sciences. A direct result of this meeting was that NLSEB was invited to join the organization of the new LIFE meeting, and Rutger Hermsen joined the organizational committee.
On the 31st of December 2019 NLSEB had 116 members.
